He's literally attempting to pull the NHL out of the Olympic hockey tournament because "we want to grow the game in China in 2022 but South Korea is a crap market" Has he literally never looked at how much South Korea has improved as a hockey market since the announcement of them hosting the 2018 Olympics?

IIHF is basically responding with "if you don't do south korea 2018, you don't get china 2022" good on you IIHF. for once.

IOC is also seemingly siding with the IIHF on this one. Bettman would have to be unbelievably stupid to back out of the Olympics now, but then again he tried to justify having continental gimmick teams in a "World Cup".

Speaking of the WCoH, Bettman doesn't even plan to have the actual IIHF national teams when the qualification thing is supposed to happen in 2020. It's likely going to be something like the World Baseball Classic where the eligibility rules are much more lenient, meaning that Ireland could probably be able to field a full roster of NHLers/AHLers despite the actual Irish national team going inactive a few years ago. Not saying this is exactly a bad idea (I, for one, would LOVE to have Matt Niskanen on Finland instead of total scrubs like Esa Lindell or Sami Lepistö) but extremely low-ranked nations like Ireland should only be a last ditch effort if they're that desperate to make it almost entirely consist of NHL players. Better ideas would be countries like France/Italy/Poland/Ukraine, since all of them play in at least a mildly respectable level on the international stage and have large amounts of North American players with ancestry from there.
