Ranks are grouped into different categories, with each category having a varied amount of responsibilities and authority. There are, as of December 2017, three rank categories total.
The 𝘦𝘯𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥 category consists of the ranks Private through Specialist. Enlisted personnel are the spearhead of the Aurelian legions and have very limited degrees of power. They are the primary fighting force of the Empire.
The 𝘯𝘰𝘯-𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘳 category includes the ranks of Corporal and Sergeant. Non-commissioned officers are both experienced fighters and mentors; they are tasked with training enlisted personnel, leading troops in combat, and maintaining discipline among the lower ranks. Non-commissioned officer positions are also the first step in pursuing a career as a commissioned officer.
The 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘥 𝘰𝘧𝘧𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘳 category encompasses the ranks of Lieutenant to General. While all of the officer ranks are unique and each rank has its own responsibilities, commissioned officers are, first and foremost, the leaders and role models of the Empire. They have universal authority over lower ranking personnel.

Every rank has different duties and responsibilities delegated to it to provide for a streamlined and efficient way of running the Empire.
The 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘦 rank is the most basic rank in the Empire. A private is focused on executing the commands of their superiors to the best of their ability.
The 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴 rank is the same as the private rank, but with the addition of being allowed to be taken as an apprentice by non-commissioned officers or commissioned officers.
The 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘵 rank is highest obtainable enlisted rank. Specialist is granted to individuals who are gifted in specific areas of combat, such as sword fighting or gun fighting, but do not wish to pursue a career in a leadership capacity by moving to corporal.
The 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘭 rank first non-commissioned officer position, and is the first true leadership position in the Empire. Corporals are tasked with learning how to command troops in battle and better themselves as a leader. This is also the first rank to which "Sir" is used to address a person, as well as the first rank at which an individual may take an apprentice.
The 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘵 rank is the highest non-commissioned officer position. Sergeants are usually advisers to cohort leaders within legions and can become the second-in-command of a cohort. They are bold and ferocious fighters and are expected to excel at every form of combat; they are also expected to take apprentices whenever one is available.
The 𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘢𝘯𝘵 rank is the first commissioned officer position. Lieutenant is the first rank purely focused on leadership rather than combat. Lieutenants lead cohorts in legions and are focused on leading to the best of their ability.
The 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘯 rank is tasked with leading cohorts if a lieutenant is not availible; they are also the highest officer rank that is tasked with leading raids and defenses.
The 𝘮𝘢𝘫𝘰𝘳 rank is unique in the sense that it does not have any specificed leadership role in the Empire itself; instead, majors are tasked with controlling and training the Auxilia. They are also advisers to legion legates.
The 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘭 rank is tasked with commanding Aurelian legions. Colonels are responsible for the administration, recruitment and activity of their designated legion. They may assign Lieutenants and Captains as their cohort legates.
The 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 rank is the highest achievable rank within the Empire. Generals are the hand of the Emperor; they lead the group when he is not present and have near unlimited power over the lower ranks.

The structure of the legions of Aurelia is simple and not hard to grasp.
The 𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘰𝘯 is the highest military sub-unit and compromises the main fighting force for the Empire.
Each legion is led by a commander, almost always the rank of colonel, called a 𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘦. The legion legate is responsible for the day-to-day activities of the legion.
Each legion has two 𝘤𝘰𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘴 of ten enlisted men each. Each cohort is led by a 𝘤𝘰𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘦, which is usually a lieutenant or captain.
Unit pride in the Empire's legions is heavily encouraged.
