A brief look at history shows that people will be happy to have men die for their country if the common man of their state is a patriotic man. I mean, look at America during WWI! If you've never heard of the Espionage Act, look it up. The Espionage Act was put in place to "remove spies trying to undermine the war effort". The Espionage Act arrested many leaders in America which did not support the war effort. It also spurned much racism towards German Americans. If my memory's correct, I even believe there's a speech from the governor of Iowa just before WWI that even goes as far as to say that English should be the only language spoken in the state of Iowa, as well as the only language taught, and the only language mail should be written in. This, to me, seems like particularly nasty and war-hungry behavior. Why did this happen? It was all a surge of patriotism that swelled and became nationalism. The problem I have with patriotism is that for every viewpoint there is always a radical, and someone with radical patriotism is a nationalist who is bent on starting war with any country that insults their own. War means loss of human life, and war started because of nationalist views is lives of people wasted.

Patriotism does not equal war mongering bro. Look it up.

Patriotism means being proud of of your countries values and achievements. Which does not fit the definition you said. Get Out!

Actually you're both right. OP's definition is neo-patriotism. Believeing everything your country does is right no matter what. Pepper's definition is almost like social patriotism. Being proud of your country, its people, its values, and its achievements.

Did you not read my post? It may have been lengthy, but I would like you to know that my point was patriotism can transform easily into nationalism, which is the equivalent of war-mongering.

Patriotism is not all that bad. It is bad when it grows to nationalism. I think I could agree with everyone here.

It's not. Patriotism simply makes them blind. ☜▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬☜☆☞▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬☞ - Candymaniac, a highly reactive substance.

Pepper's definition is almost like social patriotism. Being proud of your country, its people, its values, and its achievements. ---------------------------------------------------- It normally pisses people off, however, when people start inventing history and achievements.

Ethnic Western Nationalism is lolzuly. Besides the Celtic movements and Native American and Native Latino movements, these people are essentially saying they're proud to be German.
