The unfollow button would stop threads that you've posted on from continuing to bump up to the top of your recent 25 active posts list here:

Basically, you would go to the thread that you want to be removed from that list and click "Unfollow". Then, when others bump it, it won't bump on your list. This can be disabled when you uncheck the Unfollow button on the thread again, or if you post on that thread again after unfollowing it.
There would also be another tab on the MyForums page showing you all of the threads that you have unfollowed, so you can manage them there.
And the reason is just so that you don't need to see things that bump on your recent forums that you don't care to see. Like right now, for example, I have 5 threads that have been bumping that I don't want to see on the list again such as the Petition to remove price floors, liquid games, and other threads with over 1000 replies on them.
