Quite frequently, whenever I suggest to someone that they should make their game/product more customizable, they say that it would make the system less user friendly, and then they completely disregard anything to do with customization. What are your thoughts on why people thing this way?
Why not just hide customization options until they are needed?
Example:
Having tabs on top of tabs in an item's properties in Windows will make the properties less user friendly, but what if those properties were hidden away until they were needed? The way Windows organizes the control panel is a perfect example -- users get an view of categories which then branch down into further details. |

"Customization ~= Not User Friendly"
You just said that Customization = User Friendly, or Customization is User Friendly |

Just because a does not mean not b, does not mean that a means b.
Title means that just because you have customization, does not mean that it won't be user friendly. (If you have customization, it may or may not be user friendly)
As opposed to what you proposed, which means that customization means that it is user friendly. (If you have customization, it will be user friendly no matter what)
@OP
Too many options and you don't know what to do. I don't know what else to say, as I am extremely biased on this. I love customization. I thrive in customization. My own scripts needs customization to the max. Applications I use need a lot of customization for me to enjoy them. Which is funny, because I am usually very indecisive. Interesting... |

@Oysi: Would you like to choose your layout for the customization screen? |

What we're really referring to here is of;
User Usability
User Friendly-ness (Friendliness)
First of all, User ability will be hampered, as some users might not be able to know how to do the tweaks and whatnot, however, this is an easy fix, as said before, simply 'hide' it under an 'advanced' tab or something.
Regarding User Friendly-ness (Friendliness), customization will ALWAYS be user friendly, as it would satisfy the end-user more. :) |

You need a checkbox that disables the tutorial mode.
Hide it in a settings page somewhere.
When the user discovers it, it means he was independently exploring what your program can do, and as such is ready for the good stuff. |

What Oreo said
Having many options doesn't mean complexity
Hide the less common, and advanced options somewhere else
For example:
Volume:
-Amount
Other: (tab)
-Mixer
-Max Db
-Min Db |

I hate how whenever someone adds in an "Advanced" section in Settings they start using a bunch of random abbreviations and acronyms that make no sense. |
