"Yeah, I hear you," she said, flashing her a quick grin. Aimee waited until she looked convinced, then went back to looking out of her window, watching the trees zip by, twirling a curly strand of sun-kissed blonde hair in her fingers. "Like I was saying," her mom continued, "just because your father got custody of you doesn’t mean you get to forget all about me. Remember, you’re still coming to visit me for Christmas. You’d better remember my name. And don’t forget what I look like, either." Aimee rolled her eyes. "Don’t worry, Mom, I’m not gonna--" "Look, here we are!" her mother exclaimed in a phonily bright voice, a very forced-looking smile on her face. The gravel that had crunched beneath the tires turned into smooth paved stone as they pulled into an enormous driveway. A large wooden sign had the words Beaumont Preparatory Academy carved into it. "Wow," Aimee breathed, lowering the window and sticking her head out to get a better view of the place. Large, old stone buildings were scattered around campus. Towering trees and lush vegetation filled in all the gaps, and bright flower bushes speckled the landscape with strategically placed dots of colour.

Her father turned to her mother, who was watching them with her arms folded. "Hi, Marie," he said, looking at everything except her. "Hello, John." Her voice was icy. An awkward silence hung in the air until Aimee tentatively ventured, "So…" Marie quickly said, "Well, I’ll get going, then." She hugged Aimee. "I’ll see you at Christmas. Don’t be a stranger, okay? Call me." She gave John a cold glance, then left. "I will, Mom. Love you," Aimee replied, watching her leave. She heaved a sigh and turned to her father. "So," she began, putting on a smile. "What now?"

As it turned out, Aimee had come at the perfect time. Her father was just about to give his Beginning-of-the-Year speech for all the students, and he figured he’d introduce her up there as well. "But why do you have to introduce me to everyone?" Aimee protested, feeling her stomach knot at the prospect of being onstage in front of the entire school. "Can’t I just mingle like a normal student?" "Um, see, here’s the thing," her dad stammered, scratching the back of his head. "Uh…you’re kindoftheonlygirlhere." "What’d you say?" He sighed. "Well, all the students have to know who you are so it isn’t too weird, seeing as this is an all-boys school and all--" "Wait a minute, what?!" Aimee yelled, her eyes wide in disbelief. "Are you telling me I’m the only girl here?!" Her dad gave a sheepish grin. "Well…yeah." Aimee blinked rapidly, then turned and began to pace the room, walking as if in a daze. Her mouth hung open. She didn’t blink. She just kept wandering around the room, muttering incomprehensible things under her breath.

"Uh, Mimi?" her dad tentatively asked, trying to catch her eye. "Are you okay?" She stopped in her tracks and directed her gaze at him. "Oh, yeah, I’m great," she said, her voice dripping sarcasm. "Everything’s just peachy, especially since I just found out that I’m going to be spending the next four months with a school full of nothing but sweaty, smelly, immature teenage guys!" "Oh, come on now, you’re overreacting--" "Am I? Am I really, Dad?" Aimee shook her head and gave a short, mirthless laugh. "I mean, how is this even going to work?" "Now, I’ve got it all planned out," he said, relieved to be discussing something he had thought out. "Don’t you worry about a thing, Mimi. It’s going to be just fine." He smiled at her, then glanced at his watch. "Shoot! We’re late!" He grabbed her hand and rushed out of the room. "Come on!" Aimee was still feeling anxious as her dad pulled her along to the auditorium. Oh, Aimee, she thought. What have you gotten yourself into?
