i just wanted to post this here for people running windows 8.1 but who are unable to run roblox player. this solution does only work by letting you start games directly from a browser, but it works. you need to have acces to an administrator account. before doing this, if you still have roblox installed, make sure to uninstall it by using the search function->right mouse click on roblox->remove step 1: Press play on a random roblox game and let the client install. DONT TRY TO RUN A SECOND GAME. IT MESSES UP INSTALLATION AND YOU WILL HAVE TO REINSTALL. step 2, get WMVCORE.DLL and WMASF.DLL, just google them and take the topmost page. step 3: put both DLL files in desktop. step 4: right click on roblox player's shortcut in desktop->open file location, repeat that until you get to a folder with a whole list of files.copy both DLL files and paste them there. if there is no shortcut at desktop, it's a sign of an instable installation(it removes shortcut on second try), you will need to uninstall and repeat step 1. step 5: right click on roblox player's shortcut again->Properties->compatibility->change settings for all accounts-> change run compatibility mode to vista service pack 2, check reduced colors and choice 16 bit. then save. step 6: try playing a roblox game again. roblox should now launch and work

I tried it on Firefox but it failed. The only browser that has no issues opening the ROBLOX game without the patch is Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.
