The Dwarves were made by Aulë, whom they themselves call Mahal, meaning “maker.” Dwarves are a short, stocky race, a little taller than hobbits but much broader and heavier. Most Dwarves have thick, luxuriant beards in which they take great pride, and often fork or braid them and tuck them into their belts. They seem to favour simple durable clothing, coloured hoods and heavy cloaks for traveling, and belts of gold or silver. For battle their soldiers have elaborately crafted armor and helmets, bearing various angles and styles that are trademarks of Dwarven crafting styles. Their armor is masked with symbols (after the manner of those used in forges for shielding the eyes) that are hideous to look upon. Dwarves are a proud and stern race and are made to be sturdy to resist the dangers of this time. They are physically very strong, have great endurance, especially in the ability to resist heat and cold, and they make light of heavy burdens.
