"no support, this is scriptable, if not i am gonna support this."
He just said that when he tried to script it it caused major lag.
"...now before you say that this is all scriptable and has been done i want you to know that this method may cause severe lag if it's applied on a large scaled environment, by that i mean having tons of parts and changing every part's pull by inserting BodyForces into them." |

@Yoshi, It never causes lag in my places, and usually they have over 10,000 parts... So, I don't understand why it would be a problem for anyone else. ROBLOX is a game of learning, not a game where people should be asking ROBLOX to do everything for them. If it's able to be put into a script, then I don't think it should be a feature.
I do not support this feature because of the fact that you can make this in a less than 50 line script, and the mere fact that it is able to be made in a script is a reason for not supporting this. Great idea, but people should start being creative and doing things on their own instead of expecting others to do things for them. There's a word for that; laziness. |

I support this idea, but @InLua kind of has a point, everybody is expecting ROBLOX to do everything for them, The things i would expect ROBLOX to do is something like the pistons (Robot/Truck physics), that ROBLOX said they would release almost a year ago. Pistons are not scriptable, the reason is simple, because you can't CFrame an unanchored part into another, it would pop out on top of it, you can't move welds that good either, these type of things would make sense to suggest, right?
Gravity can be scriptable, so we shouldn't expect ROBLOX to do it for us, but then again, it does cause quite a large amount of lag depending what system you are using to play games on ROBLOX (On both sides, unsupported and support, or "neutral"), the only thing we can expect ROBLOX to do for us in this situation is prevent systems from lagging when we use this gravity feature (Hoping it will be released, but suggesting ideas in the forums don't seem to get recognized by any of the ROBLOX staff members, so we can't expect all the good suggestions to be released :/...) which would be nice. But people do need to learn, which ROBLOX allows anybody to do, its just their decision whether or not they wan't to learn how to use ROBLOX Lua, if you choose not to and then ask ROBLOX to do something for you, then i don't know what to say, because it isn't hard to learn the basic loops and functions, took me about 2 weeks (It's not that long guys..., its worth it!).

I would like this idea, but it does qualify as WNTS since you can't suggest anything that's scriptable.
Sorry. |

@Otaii
Read the text below please, as i describe the reason of this suggestion.
@inLua and @OKevinO
As i said in my post, yes this is certainly possible and i HAVE the ability to do it, so laziness is not the reason of this post.
The problem that i have is the lag, like i said.
10 000 Parts? Yes of course, you wouldn't feel any lag if all of these parts were static or making a pure constant translation in space. And certainly not when that's pretty much the only thing that's going on in your place.
All my respect sir, but do you have any idea what happens when you try to implement such feature into an actual game that is consistent of many other running processes?
One word, LAG!
Don't get me wrong, i know exactly what i'm talking about because i have experienced this when i've put it in my old sci-fi building game and i have enough witnesses to prove this.
You may ask yourself, how could this possibly make such a big amount of lag ?
First of all i want to tell you that 10 000 parts is not a really big number in my and most cases.
These parts could be free to execute translation and they ARE in my case, every second there is at least 7 500 parts constantly moving in all sort of directions with changing accelerations. Also, don't forget about the parts that get deleted or spawn, their mass has to be calculated and the most laggy part, filling ALL of them with BodyForces.
"Hah, why don't you just lower the amount of parts?", like "Theguy" said.
Yes, that is possible but here you are setting limits and where's the fun in that? I would like to push boundaries further away to allow us to make better games. Because, hey, that's what ROBLOX is doing everyday right?
I also want you to realize how SIMPLE this is for ROBLOX, if you compare their effort and deal able problems to mine, it is really S-I-M-P-L-E for them.
Do you know why this is more simple in their case? Because editing the gravity from the game-core is very easy since you'll have to change one constant value, (196,2).
And do you know how much benefits we'll get from this feature instead of the scripted method?
Here are two sentences from my post:
"I also want to let you know that the performances of games that will use 0G will increase because the game core wouldn't have to take care of the pull of parts in Workspace."
"It is also hard to make this method work because most of the people can't script, while ROBLOX could easily give us this option." - It is not hard in my case but if you think about other people, this feature would give them more chance and there are many other situations where scripting gravity is necessary.
Thank you for your replies and time! :] |

Support (When their physics engine is updated).
I've been wanting to do this for years but I can't script anywhere near well enough to do such a thing. (Mainly with walking on walls) |
|
|
Note the word, 'Over'. My Executor-class Super Star Destroyer has over 49,681 faces. I also have made it flyable. I made the ability to walk on all of its surfaces (As in the gravity cube place) and had 50 people test it AT ONCE to benchmark it. Gravity was also off (so if you jumped you would not come back to the ship if you were far enough away from it). Little to no lag at all. Please do not make the excuse of lag... Thank you. |
