My massive guide to AR is taking much too long, so I'm gonna make this to help you with those moments where you find a new gun, but don't know whether to take it or not.
The biggest thing when picking a gun is something most people forget about:
KNOW YOUR CALIBER.
EVERY gun in the game uses some sort of ammo, and this ammo has a caliber. That's the numbers when you mouse over the mag (eg. 5.56 x 45mm, 7.62 x 51mm, etc).
Better caliber means better damage. It's really that simple.
I asked a friend who spends a lot of his time at AR what the 3 best primary guns were. His answers were the PP-19, the M249, and the G36K.
Let's look at the caliber of these 3.
The PP-19 uses 9 x 18mm rounds. This is a very small bullet, and it's pretty weak. It's actually the same that a Makarov uses. (Yes, that's why I call it the 'fully automatic Makarov'.)
The M249 seems like the better out of it and the G36K, but they use the same caliber - 5.56 x 45mm. They do the same damage.
As I said before, better caliber means better damage. I'll show a list of the best caliber going from best to worst (in damage).
1. 12 Gauge (Double Barrel, M870)
2. .303 British (Lee Enfield)
3. 20 Gauge (Auto 5, Maverick 88)
4. 7.62x51mm (M14, HK21)
5. 7.62x54mmR (Mosin-Nagant)
6. 7.62x63mm (M1 Garand)
7. 7.62x39mm (AK-47, RPK)
8. .45 ACP (M1911, USP .45)
9. 6.5x50mm (Fedorov)
10. 5.56x45mm (G36K, Patriot)
11. 5.45x39mm (AK-74, AN-94)
12. 9x19mm (M9, CZ-75)
13. 9x18mm (Makarov, PP-19)
So, yes. I hope this can help you pick a gun to help you get the next badge.
