Via NBC Sports' Pro Soccer Talk: Blatter claims that Major League Soccer will be moving towards a European calendar. The topic itself is not new, but Blatter’s comments are, and Duane Rollins of Canadian Soccer News posted audio from the FIFA man’s Monday press conference ahead of the U-20 Women’s World Cup. And inside of that audio comes the remarks from Blatter, which comes in stark contrast to the “not in the short-term” comments of MLS commissioner Don Garber when asked about the shift to a ‘winter schedule’ in his State of the League address this December. The question for me has not been about the fields and North American weather, rather whether MLS is anywhere near ready to compete full-time with college football and basketball, the NFL, the NBA, and the NHL (let alone other European leagues). Right now, the summer is basically MLS vs. MLB. It’s an exclusivity window the league would sacrifice in order to align with Europe. Perhaps a split season could work, closer to Liga MX or some of the Scandinavian countries, but is MLS — and more importantly, its clubs’ attendance — possibly ready for the competition?

I imagine Klinsmann had a big part in getting this done.

This is going to kill the MLS. They will not be able to directly compete with NFL, NCAAF, NBA, NHL, or even MLB Playoffs. THey will be 6th or 7th priority. At least now, they are 2nd. Also, imagine playing a game in January in Toronto or MOntreal wheere the temp. is usually below 0F in that time period. It won't work

@Cerco It will work in some markets. MLB Playoffs isn't even a question, there's not that many games to compete. NBA and NHL are a maybe for competition, NFL will always be #1, except ticket prices are very expensive. So we'll see.

They will also be competing against the Premier League. With every match being broadcasted on the NBC sports group. The MLS can't really compete with their TV deal.

I just think this will bury the league so much. Yes, it's easier to have all the leagues around the world on the same calendar for certain reasons, but the MLS can't compete with the big four major sports in the heart of their seasons. Plus the other leagues like the Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, and all the other European leagues.
