TWO FELLOW CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS? Yay :) And that's really good for a first mile! Do you keep this pace? Is this 2 or 3 miles?

My most recent mile was 6:10. I really lose energy for 3 mile runs. 31:24 minute 3 mile... Most of the time it's just really sore ankles.

Yeah, 123, you should do one of two things: 1.) Pace yourself to a slower mile 2.) Run longer distances when practicing and run outside of practice.

My conditioning is great, but I get really sore calves and ankles around a mile and a half. I honestly think it's from the side-tackles I take in soccer.

That's interesting. Then your tendons probably need strengthened. Maybe try doing more jumping and stuff like that. It could also be you are coming down too hard on your feet when you run. You don't want to come straight down on your ankles, and you don't want your toes to be extended downwards too far (see Dorsi Flexing)

@yonnd Do you stretch at all before you run?

Nah, I need to go out this fast. I had the same problem when I stared out at 6:10. I need to make my 2nd & 3rd miles go faster.

Yeah I stretch...

#146154597Tuesday, September 16, 2014 1:00 AM GMT

Yeah, I didn't even think about stretches. Make sure you do dynamic stretches before practice and competitions, warm up a bit beforehand, and after practice and competitions, do static stretches.

@extemmas Have you ever done mile, 800meter, or 400 meter repeats for practice? Do 12+ 400 meter repeats at a pace 15 seconds better than 1/4 your goal mile pace. Do 6+ 800 meter repeats, not sure what pace, or 3+ mile repeats, not sure what pace.

Hmmm, well a 6:10 mile to a 31:24 5k seems unusual even with sore ankles

#146155174Tuesday, September 16, 2014 1:07 AM GMT

Just did 6 800m repeats today at a 2:50 pace

I don't have a very high pain tolerance. So that could also add to it.

#146156090Tuesday, September 16, 2014 1:19 AM GMT

That could explain it. I don't have a very high pain tolerance either but I'm getting better at tolerating it.

You're well on your way, extremmas. Cross country, you need to push through all the pain. Eventually it will subside, or else it just won't matter that you hurt anymore.
