Introduction to Byzantium
The Byzantine Empire was an extension of Rome, being previously and formally named “The Roman Empire” (as it was the remnants of the Eastern Roman Empire). This Empire lasted 1203 years before having its prime capital fallen to the Turkic Mongoloids, led by Mehmed II in 1453.
It sufficed some of the most cultural and technological advancements in medieval Europe at its, time, such as the use of “Greek Fire” being an early stage of napalm and the famous “Hagia Sophia” being the centre of Christian Orthodoxy in Europe for 843 years.
Its prime national colours ranged from crimson red and bright yellow (being the previous colours of the Roman Empire); its logo was represented with a two headed golden eagle displaying its Imperialism and dominance.
Controversially it is disputed whether the Byzantine Empire was of Roman or Greek origin. Although the Byzantines referred themselves as “Ton Basileion Tou Romaion” (the Kingdom of Rome in Greek) and was initially an extension of Rome it assimilated onto a Greek form of culture, drastically changing its identity as a nation.

Definitions of its successes
Although the Byzantines had failed to defend Constantinople in 1453, as well as failed to retain its land strength throughout the 1200 hundreds, it contributed massively to Medieval Europe financially, culturally and technologically. By successes we can assume their achievements and impacts to the rest of the world at its time.
Cultural dominance
Being culturally dominant is an important attribute to being a successful empire.

Watch a documentary about the subject, then write what you learned from the documentary. |
