3/5 compromise was an important part to keeping the Union intact in the early days. The South would never have agreed to joining the Union if its slave system was abolished. The South didn't really have much of a choice either; it was either abolish slavery and ruin its economy and its entire society, or keep everything stable while continuing slavery. Not pretty, but it's what was necessary at the time.
