You don't have to follow people if you don't want to. Because it's optional it doesn't matter. The real good update here is the 200 friend limit. For those of you who take pride in your many thousands of friends, get lots of followers instead.

i like the concept, not so much the dishing out following should have it's own status bar, like below the actual it has a "Follower" bar thing, so you can share news on whatever you're doing (i'm thinking of a place building aspect) or show you favorite-d something friends should be kept as it is (i find the limit a bit silly, however it does make it more realistic) and i like the best friend thing as it is
