I guess it's because The United States was built as a Christian nation, and over time, the meaning of Christmas has changed. To some like me, it still signifies the birth of Jesus, and gift exchange, but to others, it is only gift exchange, which sort of neutralizes the holiday nowadays.

If you look back, the time period, 1700's was very strict and colonial. When the English immigrated, the majority were religious. So, ancestry passes down those beliefs. If you look at the pledge, it states America is "One nation under God", which signifies the spiritual roots.

Which can show how America's people held spiritual beliefs, thus encouraging "Under God" to be added. It's really a sgn of faith and Patriotism.
