All I was taught about it was that nobody won and the British burned the White House.

They destroyed our capital but we did destroy the Canada capital. Neither side really won. The biggest win came after the war was over in New Orleans. Butch Jones is the real Messiah

we barely cover the war of 1812 because it's not that important compared to other wars but we're taught that nobody won it maybe a section in a chapter is dedicated to it

"are you being taught that the US won the war of 1812?" no lol it's irrelevant to US history too
drbat
#154968465Friday, January 30, 2015 11:43 PM GMT

War of 1812 is actually not irrelevant. It is one of the main reasons the America started to have industry. People in New England couldn't buy textiles, metals, and finished products so they started their own factorys to do that. It also led to the Era of Good Feelings. It destroyed the horrid idea of having two parties compete against each other (too bad we have it today though) The War is more important that at first glance. Had this war not happened, the U.S. would of never seen the common man become president (Andrew Jackson became a military hero after the Battle of New Orleans which help boost him into the white house) Butch Jones is the real Messiah

@drbat so in other words, it wasn't important at all 1. Industrialization was happening worldwide and in the North already and would have continued. There are no cotton fields or plantations in the North so that's the only industry they could support 2. Andrew Jackson was a really bad president and didn't get anything done. He started the spoils system and gave jobs to his friends and relatives while he was in office, he started the Indian Removal Policy too... Congress hated all of his ideas and vetoed pretty much all of them. 3. Let's not forget he killed a man in a duel while he was drunk because he was accused of cheating in a horse race He had the worst temper of any president and he quoted on the last day of his presidency that "he had but two regrets, that he had been unable to shoot Henry Clay or to hang John C. Calhoun."

Didn't talk at all about the War of 1812. Maybe a few paragraphs about it were in the book, but I didn't read that. For the Vietnam War, my English teacher was the one that said US lost the war in Vietnam, since they didn't do anything about their objective that lead them to Vietnam in the first place.

@rune you ranted on about president jackson and only addressed one of drbats points and you didn't really disprove him at all

Calhoun." 1. It would not have been as fast in U.S. We had England to rely on to send finished products. When we got in a war with them we started making our own. 2. I agree he was a horrible president. Except you know, he's the only president to pay off the debts. He was a very successful president. You know he only replaced around 15% of the federal spots? Also the system happened before he took office. John Quincy Adams did it to an extent. Thomas Jefferson even did it. He had support in congress. He hated Indians. They attacked his home when he was young. They attacked Nashville when he moved there. Many people think he was the one who moved the Indians. He moved a tiny population. Martin Van Buren moved nearly all of them. 3. He was a proud person. Dueling was fine in this time. Heck, Vice president Aaron Burr killed Alexander Hamilton. I don't admit it was good Henry Clay insulted his wife. The one thing you don't do is insult Jackson's wife. He fought many duels because people insulted her. John C. Calhoun nearly got South Carolina to secede. Butch Jones is the real Messiah
