I know this has happened in history before, but does anyone know of any examples of individual citizens gaining more power than the government using dirty methods |

No I mean people like Pablo Escobar |

"No I mean people like Pablo Escobar"
...who's that?
|
|
|
Look him up it's a fun read |
|
|
Al Capwn? Notorious bootlegger. |
|
|
Probably Al Capone
that guy was rolling in dollar bills until the 21st amendment was passed
so mean if money is how we're measuring power this guy is making millions a year smuggling alcohol into the US

Oh yeah Al Capone is a good one
Can anyone give me more obscure ones though |
|

Ask any person who's played a rogue in D&D or any tapletop RPG
they probably drew inspiration from SOMEWHERE

shoguns maybe?
because they indirectly controlled the government
or
well
idk
does being more powerful than a puppet government count? |
|
|
@Mantine
Weren't shoguns essentially emperors, even though the actual emperor appointed them

i'm not really sure of your question
any time you have direct power, you have your own sort of government
this probably won't count either but
rasputin because he rose to power through dirty methods and arguably became more powerful than the person who gave him power due to his religious influence over the tsaritsa |

"Weren't shoguns essentially emperors, even though the actual emperor appointed them"
yeah but not nominally
so they ruled through a puppet government |
|
|
i'm basically asking if emperors were pretty much figureheads

oh never mind
I think what he means is people or groups who gained so much power or money or influence that they actually posed a threat to the government
