i say we should be able to hide our previous names from other people, though they still exist it's just i don't want it to be known if i change my username if that made sense at all.

The reason they show the previous names is because so people can remember you. They may not know what your new name is and can easily verify who that person is with the ? button. It actually helps more than it doesn't. No Support

Note: I've not read anything other than the original post. Anything below this is just a reply I posted on another thread which was exactly the same as this. ---- No support. There's simply no need. Why? Nobody cares. Those who do need to find something better to occupy their time with. Also, I question how you'd deal with a scammer who insists on hiding their previous usernames (for example)? Sure, you've got their userId, but not everyone is going to be able to (or willing) to remember a string of numbers. I could understand the need for this if your previous usernames appeared everywhere. As in, if they were shown in-game, on the forums, on your games, etcetera - But they're not. Your previous usernames are shown in two places, on your profile and in the user search results, with the latter being the only one which is up-front about who you are.
