I really liked The Hunger Games, and yes I did read the books before I watched the movie. Also Divergent is pretty good but the movies are awful.

If it counts as a series, the Godfather. All three of it's books are collected in the same book (kinda like the bible) and then there is a prequel called "The Family Corleone" so I guess it's a series?
