If you make a post saying MTers in a nutshell, it is automatically assumed you are talking about the present because you aren't saying "how MTers used to be in a nutshell." The example of George Washington doesn't apply because Washington is not in the present so he could only be talked about in the past, but since we are in the present it is assumed that you are talking about the present.
