But I gotta say...Even though most of the users are making fun of America, the posts on this are pretty hilarious:

This is a first time meeting, how can the two teams hate each other this much?
Every NYCFC fan was a NYRB fan two years ago. |

@Chriz
Ikr, it kind of makes me cringe. While I like the rivalry, and it seems genuine, I can't help but feel those guys and those "invested" in the Hudson Derby are just trying to be like England and other European soccer-crazy countries. |

Exactly, in a league as young as the MLS, most rivalries just seem manufactured to me.
Nothing in America will ever be Real Madrid v Barca or Celtic v Rangers. |
|
|
@chriz
yea because no rivalry in america has any political or religious THING to heat it up |
|
|
oops i capitalized THING lol |

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic.
I mean, most rivalries are either territorial or based on team history. |

When it comes to sports, I've only genuinely hated a team so much that I would slam walls, actually get angry, etc. and that's the Seattle Seahawks. Otherwise, rivalries haven't really done it for me, not sure how other people feel, but that's my story. |

Also, on an unrelated note, the Sounders and Timbers have been rivals for over 40 years |
|
|
no the reason barcelona and real madrid is a rivalry
theyre the 2 best teams
along with political reasons
real madrid was the team of the state, the team of franco
barcelona was more the republican team in spain
same with celtic and rangers
rangers is the protestant unionist team and celtic is the republican catholic team
there can be rivalries based on geography like DCU vs PHI or PHI vs NYRB but it will never be as big as something with a political or religious thing to spark off violence |

One thing about rivalries (even though it's not very relevant to the conversation right now)
As a Cardinals fan, the Cards/Cubs rivalry is by far the most historic, but the better one, in my opinion, is Cards/Reds. EVERYONE in St. Louis wants to see Johnny Cueto get beaned after he took out Jason LaRue (Cueto just got traded to the Royals, but the hatred is still there). Most Cardinals fans joke about the Cubs, the anger at the Reds is real. |

Agreed @ Chriz, a lot of historical rivalries, at least in the US, are becoming a thing of the past. |
|
|
this whole rivalry is just a big marketing stunt honestly |
