(Note: I thought it would be a good idea to ask the general OFL before going through with this plan)
If you don't like the idea please tell me why.
===========================
I am proposing a new playoff format, possibly in effect for S8, that would only include the top 4 teams of the conference. With this, would create an extra free week in the schedule. Instead of doing a bye week (no one likes those) we could have one (1) out of conference game for each team per season. The out of conference game would be the ranking of your team versus the same ranking of the other conferences team. (So VB would have a rematch)
Now before you go off and say how this will create disinterest, look at the standings. Almost every team in the OFL besides the Barton Bruisers or Corinth Spartans could possibly grab the 4 seed before the season ends. That means going into the final two weeks of the season, 14/16 teams are still playing for a reason (If we were to play a 4 team playoff this season, which we are not.) This makes games more exciting and mean more, especially since 1 game could cost you when you're tied for the 4 seed.
This would be an 8 game regular season. Week 9 Quarterfinals, Week 10 Semifinals, Week 11 VB
PROS:
- Top teams who have clinched playoff spots have more reason to play harder. (FFC and Rams knew before week 1 they would be in playoffs.)
- Regular season games mean way more, creating closer games.
- No 2-5 teams in playoffs. (What kind of league has a team that wins 29% of times in the playoffs??)
MIDDLE (Up to interpretation)
- 8 game season, even amount of games so each team gets 4 home/4 away
- Out of conference is back, and the teams are matched up fairly.
CONS:
- Teams like Barton wouldn't try this late in season, more rage quits.
===========================
Again, this is only a proposal, Vrillion has approved this idea, and I thought it would be nice to ask the OFL before going through with it. If you don't like it let me know, if you would rather have 5 playoff teams (4v5, 1v4, 2v3) post here. |

I do miss the out of conference games, it's always great seeing the VB rematch. Great idea.

horrible idea, this makes good players stacking on one team more likely (looking at you rams and ffc and ducks) and it's more fun when there are more teams in the playoffs. More chances for upsets etc... this is just a bad idea

@DC is it really fun for rams because i'm bored of winning |
|
|
This gives bad teams a better chance to make playoffs (Talking about fairly matches schedules) |

the bandwagon near end of season will be real |

exactly everyone will just bandwagon lol this is terrible

Do this but have out of conference games week 4, or interspersed throughout the season(1 a week) to help create an actual league, because OEC and OWC are so disconnected during the regular season |

Also add signing deadline when first team is eliminated |
|
|
@Cali that could work. Trading Deadline/Signing Deadline Week 5 or 6. |
|
|
nin make deadline sooner because by W5,6 we'll have an idea of play off teams ;/

I've voiced for five teams because I think four is too much of a polar extreme towards the direction of just catering for the team's spammed with talent, while six is probably too many teams.
Good idea but I'd like to see five. Too many issues will arise with four, coaches rage quitting, teams getting free wins because the other team is already eliminated and won't show up, obviously teams being migrated to winning teams...etc.
Remember S5 Spartans, S3 Spartans, S2 Raiders, even to an extent S6 Warriors although lebron missed the fg...upsets can happen in playoffs, my only fear is that this removes the real "upset" factor in things. |

I also respectfully disagree with the underlying assumption that this makes things more exciting. I think it's the opposite, really.
With four teams, in OEC in this format, for s7 we would already know three out of four teams who WILL make it before season even started:
FFC
Raptors
Snowhawks.
Sure, you can say it means more in the beginning of the season I guess, but after a week or so, the dust will settle much faster and instead of the latter half of the season being the most exciting, for the most part you'll have teams just waiting with the conference seeding virtually locked. |
