well first of all if you watch the video she licks it on the shelf but i wouldnt eat doughnuts from a store where the doughnuts were open and not in a case. it was bad job on part of the store.

Honestly, there were a few things that were just plain wrong. BAD 1. Ariana was rude to the workers and staff 2. She licked a donut 3. Those donuts cost money and time to make and she was very inconsiderate to lick it. 4. And sweared as well OK 1. Actually her boy friend convinced her to 2. She apologized, twice. Though it did not look so genuine. 3. And said she was 'disgusted at what she did' But I think Ariana Grande, only said sorry because the camera caught her. Kinda rude it happened on the 4th of July as well ;) I'm not American but honestly the comment of that was very rude. Not hating on Ariana, love her music and all but this was not good. ;)

the problem with it is the lack of any genuine apology (or even the lack of just saying something along the lines of 'yes, i did that, and no, i do not regret it because i am a grown woman that makes her own decisions in life'). that's likely what blew it so out of proportion.
