actually the war started over a fort not being handed to the south not slavery |
|
|
"the civil war ignition was slavery,
the fuel that kept it going was nationalism"
I always say it was state rights in general.
But slavery was in fact a big part of the state's rights.

ripint doesn't know that a debt doesn't signify if a economy is in dire straits.
if you'd look at our deficit you'd see it has been going lower and lower over the years while obama was in presidency, which means that if the next president is smart, he'll be able to lower the debt easier thanks to obama lowering the deficit. |

"ripint doesn't know that a debt doesn't signify if a economy is in dire straits."
But if you're in Dire Straits you get Money for Nothin'.
That was a bad joke, I'm sorry.

no slavery was the cause of the civil war, objectively
however the people who think southern soldiers joined the war to protect slavery are ignorant. most southern soldiers didn't even own slaves
southern soldiers joined the war to fight for their independence, much like the U.S did |

People often ask me what it means to be an American. I tell 'em it's triumph. Triumph. Triumph when we nuke our enemies. Triumph when our flag flutters in the wind on the moon. Triumph when we peer down from the moon and laugh heartily at Russia. Triumph when we depose one dictator after another. Triumph when we break into the homes of terrorist kingpins on the other side of Earth and shoot them in the face. Triumph when we use flying robots to bomb other terrorists in Afghanistan. Triumph when we were the main reason the Germans were defeated in WWII. Triumph when we freed Europe twice. Triumph. Triumph. Triumph. But it's not just the the big things, see? It's the way I can set up lawn chairs at my friends house on the Texas Rio Grande Border and share a toast to freedom while watching Mexicans charge into gunfire to enter my country. It's the way an Italian cab sits up straight and floors the gas when he hears my accent. It's seeing the wide eyes and bead of sweat running down the forehead of a German customs agent when he opens my p@ssport. It's the way a French waiter hangs his head when I refuse the wine and ask for Coke instead, in English knowing full well he understands me (and that they have it). The way an Aussie blushes and leans into the urinal next to me in the bathroom, or the scowl that meets my smirk when I tip an English waiter in US dollars covered with Washington's face. The way small mobs of Canadian school children follow me from a distance to see what a free man looks like, or how heads timidly rise and women gather when my accent stops the music in the clubs of Amsterdam. Triumph. Every bit of it, triumph. That's what it means to be an American. |

the southern states didn't have to go to war with the yankees because we already left the union
they couldn't do anything about slavery |

Yeah, guys, OP isn't launching a personal attack on America. He's just listing some things that could be improved. |

@French
Fort Sumner really didn't have anything to do with the causes of the war.
Also the yanks invaded the south because they wanted it back, that's why the south had to go to war.

"have a flag that glorifies slavery and war," |
|

lincoln wanted the union preserved, fort sumter was his excuse
the confederacy was gonna go to war regardless |

But you're obviously saying the majority is like that, or else you wouldn't have made this post.
I am simply pointing out there there are many other countries with similar situations and to say this is strictly an American problem is an unfair assumption.
I'm sure many western European countries are similar.

i was responding to him calling the flag racist, which in square form is not
the flag represents the military of the confederacy which fought not for slavery, but for what they believed to be their country, something i thought americans would understand despite the confederacy's ethics |

On this marvelous morning we have been graced with the Lord's bright dawning light, yet I have risen hours before sunrise and am camped on a gentle slope atop Mitchell's Hill
I write this telegram with anticipation that any weary confederate soldier may extract sentiments of hope and remain headstrong on his battlefield of life. Perhaps you may feel some days that the Union forces remain strong and have us outgunned, but I urge you to remember all that is good in your life so that you may muster all inklings of purpose and vigor, we are a strong army and we will surely give them the bayonet.
I have many benedictions in my own life that I have failed to give thanks for, so I pray to God that I may have opportunity to do so. There may be many other battles looming in your life; find it deep inside of yourself to remain valiant and meet every day with a rising fight.
Your friend first, and General second,
Stonewall |
