Mine is that the Maze Runner series is bland, derivative, and generally unimaginative. The entire premise of "the world is ending let's put some teenagers in a maze and then use some monster robot things to kill some of them" is so stupid I was cringing throughout the entire book.
It caters to the young adult audience in the most unappealing way by telling them they're "special", just like every other divergent-games-runner-type book. In the Hunger Games this girl is "special" because she survived some traumatic experiences by essentially pure luck, and all the boys like her and she's the best archer ever. This is handled better in the books than the movies but essentially it's ripped out of a twelve year old girl's diary. Divergent steps it up by making the main character inherently "special" and once again an oppressive government wants to keep her down because of it. The Maze Runner succumbs to the same cheap tactics making everyone in the maze "chosen" and therefore "special".
But hey, you're allowed to be wrong. |
