Weeaboos, however, are non-Japanese people who obsess over Japan. These people will have an anime pic in their username, try to learn Japanese, use Google translate and copy and paste Japanese on forums, and my reaction is

otaku is an umbrella term in the west that is usually used to refer to fujoshi hikikomori and weeaboos. but they are all different in japan and have very different connotations despite being similar terms. except weeaboo which to my knowledge is purely a western term.
otaku - an insulting honourific in japan meaning "home" and refers to those who are the literal scum of society. male members of society who obsess over anime and manga to the point of closing themselves off from society solely to read manga watch anime and talk about it online. they don't /just/ watch and read, they typically have disgusting fantasies and get bullied for it because they are disgusting men who like young women
fujoshi - a term literally meaning "rotten girl". it is commonly labeled the "girl version of otaku" but this is not wholly true. they have similar aspects but the largest determining factor that makes a girl a fujoshi is that she obsesses over fictional or real male/male relationships and really the best exemplar of this would be the BBC Sherlock fandom, god have mercy on their souls, for their upholding that male/male relationships are superior simply because they are male/male
hikikomori - a term meaning "pulling inward" or "being confined" and refers to those who close themselves off from society. this is not otaku level closing themselves off from society, they take it to a whole new extreme. they will go to extreme lengths to ensure they do not see another human being. it is suspected that a combination of societal pressures and mental illness are be the cause of this.
weeaboo - a western term to refer to western people who are fans of anime/manga and are obsessed with japanese culture. they are typically racists who have a mountain of misunderstandings of japanese culture and think japan is some otaku bastion of anime and manga. they say japanese words in their sentences sometimes or often. |
