For those of you who dont know what the Free-d plugin is, its a plugin created by OTRainbowDash5000 which allowed users to upload any obj mesh into a single union on roblox. This was a very controversial plugin that had many people mad because "it was lazy" and it changed the whole definition of "good builder" (it also ruined the car industry on roblox or maybe it improved it, but that's a different story). I am different builder. I support using free models and I support using free-d models. And I've been able to prove to people that using those things does not make building bad. In fact, I've made amazing stuff with those things. Here's some examples https://twitter.com/Mistertitanic33/status/658784231758405634 https://twitter.com/Mistertitanic33/status/652588292890828800 https://twitter.com/Mistertitanic33/status/648599057829638144 https://twitter.com/Mistertitanic33/status/621169465338818560 Im gonna explain why I think free-d models are perfectly fine. First off, roblox said in a question+answer live stream that they want roblox to look more realistic. That is why they got rid of bevels because thats not the direction they wanted roblox to go (they said this in an blog post about why they got rid of bevels). This can also be seen in the new xbox-only packages coming out. If you take a look at them, they are some realistic looking people. With that said, I will go into about the free-d plugin itself. When the free-d plugin just came out, the creator showed what the plugin can do in a video on Reddit. On Reddit, there's only a slim chance that roblox did not see it. That plugin used a hack and was out for months. The plugin was extremely controversial. Some people dreamed about a feature coming out like this. When it did come out, some complained of how it changed roblox building (which it did, but it changed it a very good way). With this plugin, people were able to create stuff that they would have never been able to make before. One surprising thing to me for sure was how long roblox let this plugin be unpatched (im talking about months). I am guessing here, but it leads me to believe that roblox didnt want to patch the plugin, but knew they eventually had to because it involved a hack. Just because someone can upload free-d models, doesnt mean they are going to make good-looking builds with them. There are sooo many more things involved in building a decent piece of artwork on roblox than just models (fog, colors, shapes, placing...) Importing models does not completely destroy the playing field for builders. Yes it ruins the experience and learning that goes into to making a good model, but to actually use those those models in a complete well done showcase involves so much more (some of which I already explained) You cannot create a well-done showcase on free-d/ free models alone which is why it does not destroy the meaning of a good showcase builder. A lot of people complained about how they worked so hard on something, only for the free-d plugin to come along and make a better version of it without the hassle. You know what I say about that? that's too bad! Back then, people had to work very hard to create/copy a book. They had to write out each letter by hand, then the printing press came along. In one swipe of a lever, you could have an entire pages printed in seconds. Am I supposed to stop people from using the printing press because I feel bad for the people who worked hard writing out each book? no! When something updates, you update with it, its too bad if you want to be left behind. Also, to those people who are mad that the plugin uses other people's work, and its unoriginal and ruins the "make everything yourself" builder, you are really one sided. First of all, before (and after) the plugin we had the free-models section of roblox. The ability to use someone else's work in nothing new. I would like to share my views on when to use someone else's work in your showcases. If the showcase is an EBR showcase (or a showcase that you are building to show off your skill to get into a group) then IT IS NOT OK to use free models or free-d models (which basically falls under the category of free models). But, if you have a nice idea or artwork that you would like to make for fun, then IT IS PERFECTLY FINE TO USE FREE MODELS. As long as the outcome is what you want, then it doesn't matter what you use to make it. In my opinion, if the free model fits your building style and blends right into your showcase, then its ok to use it, if it doesn't, then I suggest finding a different free model. I used free models all the time in my showcases, and they blend in so well that nobody sees them, its hilarious. And these are the same people that complain about using free models in a showcase. Whether you agree with me or not, free models are fine to use in builds (just as long as the build isn't something like an EBR showcase). I hope this post inspires others to agree that using free models is fine. And that using free-d models in builds is bad because its not something you made is absolutely ridiculous!

"allowed users to upload any obj mesh into a single union on roblox" Well since there is a triangle limit of 2500 that is not possible. Multiple unions sure but ANY obj into a SINGLE union nope.

You, my good sir, are the future of Roblox. Normally I would post some troll comment about your building but those pictures are among the most impressive I've seen.

I don't care what people are using to build, so long as they make it look good. What I don't like is when people use decals as an alternative to actually putting in extra details.

no, the plugin used a hack which enabled the user to upload any mesh to a single union regardless of the triangle limit.

Does this plugin "Free-d" reduce or increase lag, like if I use it, how will my game preform?

I could have sworn there were some free-d models that went over the 2500 triangle limit.

One more point that I did not see you make was that the free-d models are simply models made in an an ironment other than Roblox Studio. This does nkt mean the creator did not make the model in the first place, just that they made it in a different environment. This gives players the ability to make their own Roblox Studios if they so desire. You have a very strong point of how Roblox could have not wanted to patch it, and that very may have been the case. I hope Roblox views this thread, and sees its purpose. Roblox has so many great features

But I honestly think they are making a mistake by not letting players get a taste of the real world. Nobody earns money by putting some blocks in a position unless it's with the dev ex on Roblox. I play Rigs of Rods and BeamNG, and when I first tried Blender, it was a pain in the ---. It was not anything like Roblox Studio, and took much longer to learn, but now I sometimes work with other 3D modelers and make mods for different games. Roblox's export feature is great, but Roblox doesn't export quality good enough for most games. 123DDesign is similar to Roblox Studio, and is very useful, but it gets leggy quick. In conclusion, Roblox should bring free meshes back.
