personal experience
if he doesn't show emotion often or whatever, he is probably pretty shy and scared to act out. Most of my friends are like that, but when you get to know them, they have some really crazy ideas and stuff. If anything, he is probably taking a big step for himself by trying to warm up to someone and if anything if you two both really like eachother, why not give it a shot ? You might wanna try to take it slow before throwing out the relationship words to make sure he is really in to you
If you've been friends for awhile maybe he has had a secret crush on you ? I had one on a female friend in 8th grade but she went to another highschool and I never got the chance. If you are suddenly developing this crush it could just be you finally realizing something.
