my grandparents gave me their old custom built PC for me to screw around with, it doesn't boot up anymore, it just freezes at the "Detecting SATA hard drive..." screen the hard drive is not detected at all in my other computers, so I'm sure it failed the motherboard is a biostar a880G+ and it's upgradeable to an AMD phenom 6 core and 8 GB of DDR3 RAM should I upgrade it now or later when my current PC does ill probably just keep it in my basement until then

Definitely fix it up. It's a very capable machine. I'm sure I can help you with identifying the problem. Just send me a PM sometime.

@vine once i unplug the HDD, I'm able to boot off of a Windows setup DVD, if I have it plugged in, then the computer freezes at the POST screen so im sure it's the hard drive

Oh, and that rattling thing in the power supply is a big red flag. What's the brand of it?

If it makes a POST without the HDD, then it's just a HDD problem. Very simple and common problem.

Use another HDD And clone the existing one to it. Also change the boot order..
