Thought he was going to be a little child. Guess that proves me wrong. He can't be much younger or older than I am. Well, hopefully he won't get in the way. Hatchets aren't particularly useful for monsters; or any somewhat-trained mortal for that matter. I pull back on the reins and stop my horse.
I dismount and draw my silver sword as I walk at a fast pace towards the man and the Nekkers. When I'm within range, I cast Igni at the Nekkers in an attempt to pull their attention away from the man and towards me. |
A wave of igni flies forward from your hand, and it successfully draws four nekkers from the man, who seems to have taken a blow to his shoulder. Two nekkers were still on him.
Just then, Ranstin dashes from behind you, dodging out of the way of a nekkers swing to get closer to the young man. "Take those four, I'll deal these!" he shouts at you, forming his fingers together to cast a stream of igni toward one of the nekkers, who caught fire almost instantaneously.
Now, four nekkers were closing in on you. Two were directly in front of you, however the other two were attempting to encircle you, trying to get on you flank. |

Better not let myself get surrounded. They're just nekkers, but they're still dangerous in groups. I should disorient them all for a moment and focus on one of them to whittle down their numbers. Ranstin should be fine with killing the other two.
When I felt the nekkers behind me get close enough, I cast Aard out in all directions and immediately rush towards one of the nekkers in front of me, slashing quickly at it with my blade. |
The effect is preferable, with two nekkers flying onto their backs while the other two are disoriented. You dart forward and embed your blade in one of the nekkers on the ground, killing it quickly with finesse and experience that outmatched your age.
You could hear the scream of a nekker going down in flames while hearing the clear cut of a blade follow soon after. It was probably Ranstin, finishing off the two nekkers he had taken on.
By the time you remove your sword from the nekker's ribcage, the other nekkers have regained awareness, and one is making a mad dash toward you, claws flailing. |

Ranstin's already done with his share. He might kill the other nekkers, or just watch. Either way, I'm sure I can handle them. I step to the side of the flailing nekker and its claws; slash at the monster's neck in the process. |
While side-stepping, your foot comes into contact with loose ground and your entire stance is jeopardized as your foot slides out from under you. You're able to catch it before you fall down entirely, but you aren't able to dodge the nekker's attack entirely because of this minor mistake; it slashes you across the chest as it flies by, opening up a deep gash.
With your footing regained, you noticed that the nekker that had just attacked you is now directly behind you. Another was on your immediate right, ready to attack, while another in front of you was only just getting up, having been disoriented by your Aard blast. |

The moment I recover from losing my balance and from the nekker's attack, I straighten my posture and perform a wide slash while turning to the nekker behind me, in an attempt to hit both of the creatures that are near me. |
You swing your sword in a wide arc, your sword coming into contact with one of the nekkers, dealing a deadly blow. It was stunned, however it was not yet dead. The other nekker you intended to hit jumped out of the way at the last second.
Now, the other nekker who had recovered from Aard, was ready to attack. The Nekker jumped at you, intending to make a quick hit-and-go. |

There's still two nekkers around. If I try to stop only the one jumping at me now, the other will manage to get me. Better make sure to prepare for both. I try to step back slightly from the jumping nekker while simultaneously casting Yrden. |
You sidestep out of the way of the oncoming nekker, however is slices you in the back. You manage to follow through and cast Yrden though. |

That should be enough to even the odds. I remain in my Yrden trap, casting Igni at the nekkers in an attempt to bait them into the trap. |
You go to cast igni, however you find yourself drained, having just cast Yrden.
There's no need, though, for a nekker jumps straight at you, its movement slowing down enough once it enters the trap for you to react accordingly. |

The other nekker should be trying to get at me soon. It'll hopefully be too slowed to attack me while I'm not paying attention to it. I carefully step to the side of the slow-moving nekker in front of me and swing my sword diagonally at its neck. |
The nekker's head is severed from its body as you swing down your silver with great force, the scene looking looking like you had cut through paper.
While you sidestep out of the way, you are lucky enough to dodge the attack of another oncoming nekker! It now stands vulnerable within your trap.
From the corner of your eye, you can see that the other last nekker is still recovering from its wound. |

As the next nekker finds itself ensnared and vulnerable in my trap, I lunge forward towards it and stab at its chest-region with my silver blade. |
You lunge forward and find your blade embedded in the nekker's chest a moment later. The wound is enough to kill the nekker on the spot.
You hear a screech and turn promptly to see the final nekker looming above your head, ready to close in an jump on you. However, its plan is foiled when it he finds himself slowed by your illusion. |

I rip my blade out of the dead nekker and cast Aard at the slowed one trying to ambush me. When the monster falls to the ground, I hurry towards it and impale its head on my blade. |
With your cat-like reflexes, you rip your blade from the nekker and manage to cast Aard, just as your Yrden trap dissipates. The monster is launched onto its back, having no time to react before it finds itself decapitated by your silver sword. Finally, with four nekkers dead, the assault ended.
"A little sloppy there," Ranstin says, approaching you.
"Sloppy! He save me damn life!" the peasant objected, his hand on his shoulder.
"Do not interject," Ranstin scowled at the man. |

"Maybe I'm still waking up," I say, sheathing my sword and walking over to the peasant.
"Your mother's looking for you. Can you make it back?" |
"Aye, I can," the peasant responds, starting off before turning back to face you again.
"I uh, wan't fishin', actually. There's a chest by the riverbank I had dug up the day before; I planned ter bring it back, but I wouldn't have been able to go back if it wern't for you Witchers," the peasant adds, turning and setting off toward his village. |

A chest? Might not be much in there. Maybe a few rusty old swords someone wanted to store awhile ago. Wouldn't take too much time to go check it out though. Maybe I'm wrong and there actually is something of worth down there.
"Should we check it out?" I ask Ranstin. |
"It's your call. You cut down most of the nekkers, after all," Ranstin shrugs, sheathing his ornate silver sword. |

I nod. I'd like to check out that chest, just to make sure there's nothing valuable in there. If there is, then that's a nice bonus for me for killing those nekkers. I climb onto my horse and begin riding to the riverbank. |
You reach the riverbank, seeing some dry grass, leaves, and twigs covering something. You move it aside, the chest just where the peasant said it would be.
Upon opening the chest, you discover a bag of coin which holds about 25 crowns. There is also a diagram, with instructions on how to make Black Blood.
"Keep that. It'll be incredibly useful for our contract," Ranstin tells you, still mounted on his horse. |

I nod to Ranstin and keep the crowns for myself, as well as rolling up the diagram and putting it away on my person. Strange for someone to keep money and a diagram in a random chest. I shouldn't complain about it though. I leave the chest open and climb onto my horse, shortly before riding on to the sea-side village to hunt the katakan. |
