I am so confused about wifi signal

So when I put my phone to the floor of my room, I get 5 bars. When I put it on my desk, I get 2 bars. WTF? When I open the side panel of my PC, I get 2 bars. When I close it, I get 4 bars.. That is extremely weird. (my ethernet cable isnt long enough to reach to my desk that is why i use wifi) The placement of my router is really really bad its in my basement somewhere and moving it isn't an option because its connected with the TV stuff. I'm probably just going to get a longer Ethernet cable and this mess would be fixed but still like minor things make a huge different apparently
