because
1. if you want to transfer a file to your friend's laptop, what do you do???
2. do you have unlimited 4G internet everywhere?
3. USB 3.0 doesn't match the speed of wifi/4G/ethernet
4. you forgot to join the "Feminists" group, obviously fake heartstrings

"1. if you want to transfer a file to your friend's laptop, what do you do???"
Make a dropbox link on your phone and have them download it
"2. do you have unlimited 4G internet everywhere?"
Everywhere I go has wifi
"3. USB 3.0 doesn't match the speed of wifi/4G/ethernet"
yes, it's slower
"4. you forgot to join the "Feminists" group, obviously fake heartstrings"

because USB 3.0 has transfer speeds of 640MBps |
|
|
Physical-copies are sufficient for many purposes, regardless of certain risks.
You cannot accurately rely fully on Internet databases to keep your files entirely secure. The same realization applies for the physical variant. |
|
|
"yes, it's slower"
My internet upload speed is like 30Mbps |

"What about external HDDs?"
Even more fast |

"because USB 3.0 has transfer speeds of 640MBps"
the thing about usb speeds is that they are "best case scenario" speeds, assuming the hardware of the transferring computer can support these speeds and that the drive has been constructed to its best capacity
in most cases both of these answers are not the case, as even usb 2.0 was "supposed" to have the capacity to have 200mbps> speeds |

you really must be stupid if you prefer saving personal data on the internet instead of using DVD ROM's, SD cards, and USB drives. |

“because one day Dropbox will suddenly shutdown and all your data will be lost”
that’s why you backup your data, this thread is about the daily practical applications of using a flash drive versus a cloud provider in day-to-day experience
you can misplace your drive and then all of your data is lost
“You cannot accurately rely fully on Internet databases to keep your files entirely secure. The same realization applies for the physical variant.”
I encrypt all of my dropbox data

"Make a dropbox link on your phone and have them download it"
yes because it's way faster and easier to take out your phone, connect to a wifi or 4G, open up the dropbox app, find the file you want transferred, click on create link, wait for the extremely slow wifi speed of 3 kbps kick in, wait like 30 seconds, then have your friend type the long 37 character link into his laptop than to plug in an USB into his laptop
"Everywhere I go has wifi"
very fast right??
no.
all free wifi i ever encountered has a speed of 4kbps and is unsecure, easy to get hacked
"yes, it's slower"
4 kbps compared to a 480 mbps flash drive
ok
"twitter.com/laheartstrings"
yes because having a twitter with the name set to "Heartstrings" and said "I am elquijote" proves you're heartstrings
also you forgot to talk about your ipad pros and macbook pro which has amazing internet wifi ultra lightspeed

Transfering data with 3.0 usb drives is wayy faster than the fastest internet speed. Its also more efficient to use less bandwidth overall and it will take a hit on your router. |

My university has several hundreds mbps download speeds, and I’d just email him a link to the file or use a url shortener
“all free wifi i ever encountered has a speed of 4kbps and is unsecure, easy to get hacked”
which is why you encrypt your data
“4 kbps compared to a 480 mbps flash drive”
or a 600mbps university connection
“yes because having a twitter with the name set to "Heartstrings" and said "I am elquijote" proves you're heartstrings”
my proof goes back over a year please stop trying so hard

have you ever even used college internet tbh |

"the thing about usb speeds is that they are "best case scenario" speeds, assuming the hardware of the transferring computer can support these speeds and that the drive has been constructed to its best capacity"
True, I've noticed this a lot with crummy USB WiFi adapters, but what about eSATA? |

"True, I've noticed this a lot with crummy USB WiFi adapters, but what about eSATA?"
as usb-usb transfers and usb-esata transfers are different, they do not apply to the thread
i like external hard drives as i am not dumb and i keep my data on multiple drives, but flash drives are just not that useful anymore and they honestly only are useful as os bootable drives |
|
|
Not everyone is in college with flawless internet speeds. USB drives still have their uses. |

no offense but that is dumb
mechanical hard drives can fail at any time

I only used Dropbox throughout all of high school. Don't bring file sizes into this because you're not transferring 64gb sized files every day in class |

THANK YOU.
But even then, I'd always prefer something like a PXE boot server. |

"mechanical hard drives can fail at any time"
as can flash drives, cd roms, etc
that is why I keep multiple backups on multiple websites and hard drives
if one fails it will not matter |
