Returning to the original subject itself, have you considered using SDL instead? An SDL binary in correlation with a C# compiler and a text-editor may suit you much better than using Unity3D or Visual Studio for your needs.

@sourced idk I'm having a good time with Unity but if I was to choose something else i will probably go for monogame mainly because I think there are more C++/SDL resources out there than there is for C# but I will definitely look into it.
