The plan will work if you don't hit your dog. Trap him instead. Wrap tape around his mouth to protect you. Make sure he doesn't escape into the outside world or he might starve with the tape around his mouth. Then wrap him up in a towel to avoid being scratched. I don't know about dogs but for cats, you can avoid getting scratched by wrapping them in a big towel.
