They literally invented religious freedom, all of the places they conquered were allowed to keep their cultures and beliefs. Genghis Khan was actually pretty interested in other people's faiths and learnt a lot about them. Now if you were disloyal they weren't so friendly to you.

They let other religions practice and dress as they would but didn't allow them to build religious structures or dress as a Mongol Well, er- um, hmm... you see, hm- sigh.. um, its because- crap... well... uh-
