Finally, A Union song to end the day off strong. Bring the good old bugle, boys, we'll sing another song; Sing it with a spirit that will start the world along, Sing it as we used to sing it, fifty thousand strong, While we were marching through Georgia. (Chorus) Hurrah! Hurrah! We bring the jubilee! Hurrah! Hurrah! The flag that makes you free! So we sang the chorus from Atlanta to the sea, While we were marching through Georgia. How the darkeys shouted when they heard the joyful sound! How the turkeys gobbled which our commissary found! How the sweet potatoes even started from the ground, While we were marching through Georgia. (Chorus) Yes, and there were Union men who wept with joyful tears, When they saw the honored flag they had not seen for years; Hardly could they be restrained from breaking forth in cheers, While we were marching through Georgia. (Chorus) "Sherman's dashing Yankee boys will never reach the coast!" So the saucy Rebels said, and 'twas a handsome boast; Had they not forgot, alas! to reckon with the host, While we were marching through Georgia. (Chorus) So we made a thoroughfare for Freedom and her train, Sixty miles in latitude, three hundred to the main; Treason fled before us, for resistance was in vain, While we were marching through Georgia.

"How else would you end the war? They couldnt have spies hiding things." so you're saying it's perfectly acceptable to burn everything down?

to be fair times were changing, total war was becoming more and more acceptable it gets really prevalent in world war ii, when peaceful civilians were treated as enemies

As he said, times were changing, casualties were going up by the minute, look at Hiroshima for example.

Hiroshima was not a last minute decision. It was very calculated. I dont look down on Truman for it, I think he very much underestimated the power of the atomic bomb. But if we look back there were obviously other options available to us.

The problem with Hiroshima is the factors that went into play in the nuclear bombings, it's highly debatable considering there's a lot of "what if's" and "would's" Is an estimated amount of Allied soldiers' deaths really worth the detonation of the worst weapons mankind has ever used (on a civilian population, as well) and also radiation related deaths and illnesses in the area for years to come? Would Tojo and Emperor Hirohito have agreed to a surrender if its conditions were attuned to the Japanese's interests as well as that of the Americans? Would Japanese soldiers and civilians still have followed samurai code to the end, even if their Emperor forbid it? It's all hotly debated, so no one can really say for sure Honestly, a better example of targeting civilians for seemingly no reason (and a possible war crime) would be the bombing of Dresden. 3,900 tons of incendiaries were dropped in the city center, resulting in an estimated 22,700–25,000 deaths due to the bombs and the subsequent blaze.
