"Rilo Kiley is part emo, yeah Slowdive is mainly shoe gaze and death cab for cutie is indie ok so you got 2 on me but I have 3 on her. She's worse." slowdive IS shoegaze. they're one of the most prominent bands in the genre. although i can kind of get why you'd think rilo kiley is emo, at least judging by their song 'emotional', most of their work is indie rock with a heavy country influence (just listen to 'take offs and landings' and you'll see what i'm talking about). death cab has some material that leans a bit towards emo as well, but they're primarily indie rock, possibly with a little bit of goth influence somewhere in there (the cure specifically, as i remember him mentioning on multiple occasions that they were a big influence on him as a musician) but annnnnywho, back on topic: i actually haven't really listened to nirvana all that much - would you mind recommending me a few of their songs to try listening to?

Drain You R@pe Me Lithium Man Who Sold The World(It's a Bowie Cover and it's on the acoustic album) Seriously there whole discography except maybe a few of there singles (like Smells Like Teen Spirit) can be really annoying due to everyone having already heard them. But overall a very consistent and great band. In an interview they said they would progressively become more and more New Wave (XD) and I really would've wanted to see it.
