For someone that proposed equality for all citizens, did Andrew Jackson actually fulfill these proposals? Andrew Jackson introduced the Democratic Party which would enable those whom are “lower class” to vote however, things like the implemented spoil system, Indian Removal Act, and nullification crises contradicted his democratic statements and to some sparked a notorious reputation.
To begin with, Andrew Jackson proposed the ability to give all citizens the ability to obtain a position in a government office regardless of their background. Prior to this, only rich farm owners were in government offices, therefore this event sparked controversy within the United States. As Andrew Jackson proposed to give government positions to the general public, it seems that most had went to his loyal campaign supports which sparked what became known as the “Spoil System”. The spoil system that was put into effect had contradicted the Democratic Party as the general publics were not obtaining these positions, but his friends and supporters.
Not to mention, the Indian Removal Act which forced an abounding number of Indians to vacate from the land that initially belonged to them. Andrew Jackson, with little to no regards to the Supreme Court Order (allowing Indians to keep their land) had still forced Indians to withdraw from their homeland. A democracy supports all citizens. So the Indians should have had more say in the alterations that affected them.
Equally Important, Andrew Jackson had nullified the past legislations upon imported goods. The nullifications were only implied on the southerners, which assisted the sales of cotton. This shows that all Americans were not held to the same standards, as well that assisted sales of cotton. For a president that encouraged the actions for all Americans, you would think he would attempt to disband the cotton industry (Slavery)?
As many saw Andrew Jackson as a power hungry individual, he has done good things thing’s that balance out his two terms of presidency. Something that is adequately notable is the removal of national band to give citizens more power over national currency, as well the altering of government officials. One altered government official had stolen ten thousand (10,000) from department of treasure.
In conclusion, Andrew Jackson’s actions for the majority were not democratic. Now, Andrew Jackson could be viewed as a theoretically smart figure, but when his plans rolled out it hadn’t represented the Democratic Party.
