i like some metal songs. same with every other genre - have a few songs that i like, but the rest i don't care for particularly. classic rock is the genre in which most of the songs i like are in.

oh, i see your question. sorry - i don't think metal has ever been the genre that the majority of people favored over another.

Grunge Metal was really popular in 90's. Smells Like Teen Spirit could be heard everywhere. The sad part is that like today's popular music, most people liked the band only because one song played on the radio. There were a lot of teenage girls wearing Nirvana shirts and only knowing Smells like. I'm a Nirvana fan and they have lots of better songs.

as close as it came was the 80s and 90s, but it really wasn't that popular then either, you'd still find more pop and hip-hop fans than metalheads back then.

>There were a lot of teenage girls wearing Nirvana shirts and only knowing Smells like Teen Spirit This still applies to modern day though

"This still applies to modern day though" but they're few and far in between now.

Technically speaking, metal is more popular than pop and rap on multiple sites. Spotify did a test and discovered metal has more listeners and devout listeners than any other genre. This is due to pop and rap constantly changing over time. Pop radioplay consists of most popular hip hop songs as well as various pop artists and occasionally pop punk bands (i.e. Fall Out Boy) who lean more towards pop than anything else. Less we forget a handful of alternative artists out there. Metal has a lot more constants than pop, which is what causes a multitude of listeners to listen and remain listening rather than outsourcing so often. If you mean in terms of actual mainstream popularity, that's easily the 1980's. Metal was severely popular during the 80's. Def Leppard (albeit more hard rock) sold the most merch than any other artist during that era. Less we forget the infamous thrash metal movement that shaped metal into a completely different aspect than it is now.
