I've heard of taking an iodine solution to do something about radiation, not potassium though.

Certain isotopes of potassium are naturally radioactive. Most radiation is harmless. That's why you don't die from eating microwaved foods or using cellphones or computers. The type of radiation that is harmful though is ionizing radiation, the radiation that rips electrons apart from neighboring atoms. Ionizing radiation is measured in a scale known as the sievert scale. If you were, at once, exposed to more than 2 sieverts of radiation, you would die shortly after. Bananas contain only about .1 microsieverts though, so they're not that radioactive. You would need to eat over 2,000,000 bananas in a short amount of time to actually die of radiation poisoning.. And you would die way earlier due to food overdose or food poisoning.

That's because once Potassium Iodide (a substance similar to table salt; one halogen one alkali metal) is ingested, it helps protect your thyroid by absorbing radiation emitted from the nuclear explosion. If you had not known, the thyroid is a >>>>>VERY<<<<< sensitive organ located near the throat. Inflammation not only affects your digestive tract but also your respiratory tract. Other than protecting your thyroid however, Potassium Iodide offers no benefit to other parts of your body exposed to the radiation.
