Hi, I've noticed recently that whenever I go to a game and people are roleplaying they tend to use "I'd" in their sentences and I don't really understand why. For example: I'd attack the monster or something like that. I don't really understand why everyone is talking hypothetically as if they're stating what they WOULD do as opposed to doing it like you're supposed to in a roleplay. Anyway if someone understands this I'd appreciate the clarification.

None of us Game RP, but that is something we've noticed. The fact that you don't go along with that style tells me you should just stay here, and to hell with game RPing.

I'd slowly begin to unbuckle my belt, revealing my gigantic steak.

It's strange, glad to see I'm not insane for thinking its odd though. Is it just a roblox thing?

I haven't a clue, honestly, but I haven't seen it anywhere else, so that is very much possible. We see RP Guides here that often say to RP using "I'd" and you usually see a couple forumers jump all over that. Because like you said, it makes zero sense.

I. Despise. Hypothetical. Roleplaying.

I'm guilty of it sometimes when I'm so bored as to visit game RPs, though I don't fully understand it or fully understand why anyone does it. I'm pretty sure that the reason people do it is because they think they're making a story, and are writing everything in the past tense, yet still in the first person. So, "I would". Weird combination, but technically correct.

I'd is like... Text based pick a path?

Nevermind, I lied, but I've seen that being used somewhere.

"I would" is like saying, "Well, I would do this if I was this character, but I'm not." Meaning it's from your point of view. But it's not your point of you that you're supposed to be talking from if you're using first-person and it's about a character that is not you. You should be talking from the character's point of view. "I do this, because I am me." Technically. Incorrect.

Yeah I think PurringThunder is correct on this one. It's so confusing that this has become the standard for RPing in almost every game I go to.

"I'd" is future tense, LNG.

Fred, you should come to this forum. You seem like an actually decent person.

"future tense" IS NOT NECESSARILY.

Whenever I see "I'd ____" I end up expecting and looking for 'but' to be somewhere in the sentence.

It puzzles me, I always think they're saying what they'd do under a certain circumstance but then it just ends there Not that Game RPing has ever been very good, but it used to be better than this

Yeah, I've looked around this forum and it seems (to an extent) more organized with some nice people and decent roleplayers
