all punk is bad, that's the point. It's acutally an insult to a punk band to say they're good

Early Greenday was good. I still like Dookie to some degree after all these years maturing my ears. But they are no where near the best punk band The Clash Ramones Dead Kennedys Bad Religion Anti Flag Black Flag Descendants Social Distortion These are just a few that are way better than Green Day

Punk is so broad because in reality, a lot of other genres have strong aspects of punk in it. For example, Aeroplane over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel is easily regarded as one of the best albums of all time. They are folk-punk but I doubt anyone would be able to find another punk band that could tour with them and have a decent combination of sounds. Punk is literally in every genre. For example: Grunge is just Punk mixed with elements of metal and other genres That adds these bands to the list of best punk artists Nirvana Pixies Melvins Mudhoney Saying any band is "the best punk band" is extremely hard to do since there is just too much variety that it defintely goes to musical perspective.

@quest even though I love Anti-Flag I honestly was joking when I made this thread and people honestly thought I was being serious, I do personally believe that music is subjective and there can be no "best" other than in someone's own eyes

Btw I don't understand how people claim the Clash are "commericalized" Just because they add elements of Latino music, Jazz, and Reggae into punk music they deemed as Sellouts? Rock the Casbah and Do I Stay or Do I go are deemed as their most poppy songs, but they focus on restriction of the freedom of speech and relationships respectfully.

Anti-Flag is okay. I wouldn't call them the best. They would certainly rank high on a list, but I wouldn't say the top. The main punk bands I listen to are: Rise Against The Misfits The Descendents The Offspring Bad Religion Pennywise

One of the things that annoys me about the punk genre is that there's so much crap about what is and isn't punk i mean, of course with green day anything post-dookie (which itself was heavily commercialised) is up for debate but 39/smooth and kerplunk were unquestionably of the punk genre. but really people forget punk is such a broad genre, i know punk rockers who even consider the first two albums from muse as leaning into punk rock since a lot of it was so abrasive

You're forgetting about why punk fans hate Green Day. Keep in mind this isn't necessarily Green Day's fault, but they did play a massive part in this. Punk was at it's lowest point during the 80's. Granted, a few bands were mainstream, but not very. Once the 90's hit, a lot of rock genres became mainstream again. One of those was punk. Punk was rebranded throughout this period. You had pop-punk and hardcore punk leading the way while traditional punk became more and more forgotten. Once the 2000's hit, pop-punk was as mainstream as it could get. The obvious ringleader being Green Day. However, this wasn't necessarily a good thing. Almost every mainstream rock band during this time was alternative. This caused a massive downturn of the genre. Rock was becoming less and less popular because of the massive influx of alternative bands. By the time 2009 hit, alternative was at it's lowest in popularity. That's what caused a resurgence of alternative from 2010-2011. The newer bands started pushing out the traditional alternative formula and replacing it with outside influences like indie rock, blues and electronic. While there are a few bands that utilize the traditional alternative formula, it's safe to say there aren't many. Of course, the blame is shifted primarily on pop-punk, since it was the most mainstream form of alternative music. Bands like Paramore, Fall Out Boy and Green Day were of the most popular groups, and pretty much represented the genre as a whole. Hecklers criticized them for ditching the punk roots and replacing them with a way more melodic approach to music. Not to mention the only reason they were considered pop-punk was because they drop-tuned their guitars and maintained a fast tempo. Of course, pop-punk isn't very active nowadays. Only the bands who were popular during that time have maintained their status. Others, like Sum 41 and Yellowcard, took the backseat and started boosting up-and-coming bands. Now you know why everyone hates Green Day aside from their music being crappy.
