My kids play Roblox and really enjoy it, however, I have noticed that when they start any Roblox game their webcam becomes active. I can't see find any reason for this and it concerns me. Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening?

This has never happened to me in the almost 6 years I've been on here. Not on two different desktop pcs, four laptops, or a phone. It might be something off in your settings on whatever you're trying to play on, or possibly a virus (so check your settings and run a virus/ malware scan). Last I heard, ROBLOX does not use your camera or mic. They don't even allow selfies on here and are never going to add mic chat, so they have NO use for your camera/ microphone.

If they aren't using TeamSpeak, Google Hangouts or something else along those lines then you have some sort of tracking virus. I recommend installing BitDefender on your computer.

Thanks for the replies everyone. They've had active and updated AV since the computers were new and I've run some spyware checks on them which have come up with nothing. The activation ONLY happens when running Roblox, so I guess I should remove and re-install that to start with!

ROBLOX is implementing a new "record voice" feature I think for their recorder. Nothing to worry about, but just to be safe - download and install Malwarebytes. Best anti-malware program out there, for FREE!

@RobuxLife: If that's the case then you'd think there would be an option to disable it... I can't find any mention of webcams anywhere in the Roblox settings. Do you have any thing official relating to this feature?

It's a virus In no way does ROBLOX have access to your webcam. I checked the files and nothing related to web cam activation was found. It's either a virus or a bug. Or just oddly great timing Download malwarebytes

Hello! You have a malicious program/virus/PUP installed Its spyware. Sometimes malicious programs(PUPs, Viruses, Trojans, etc) open up a backdoor. They disguise themselves as another program, and in some cases can only run whilst the program they are disguising themselves are running. In this case, your malicious program sounds like a nasty spyware. Its disguised it self as ROBLOX, and perhaps other programs. Two choices I believe will work: (This one is not very likely)|1: If none of your antivirus programs are detecting it, most antivirus programs will scan a specific file. Type %appdata% into a folder, should take you to Roaming. At the top of the folder you need to click on "AppData" Once there open Local. Right-Click the "Roblox" folder and scan it with a program. I'm not sure if every antivirus works this way. (Best choice)|2: Get a fresh install of windows. Have someone reinstall your OS(Operating System). They will remove everything on your computer. Then you can wave goodbye to the spyware. (No, I'm not an official ROBLOX Moderator/Helper. Merely a friendly robloxian here to help)

Wow never heard of this issue, Now I have no idea what kind of camera they use. But if it has an BNC Cord then I suggest removing that from the camera. If you have the Desktop on top of a Printer (Like me) then Very likely the camera could be hooked up to your printer. If none of these worked I suggest putting tape over the camera just to be safe or Contact Roblox. Thanks. -Jon

Duct tape will NOT fix it. Neither will clogging a microphone. It will still run. It might also be accessing files/adding more malware. You might also have more spyware/PUPs/etc on your computer. What antivirus program are you using to scan? Also, try to prevent anyone from using the computer much. Playing games, etc, will only feed it more information. As sticking something over the camera won't *FIX* the problem entirely, I do however recommend it. As I'm sure they can activate it even while windows is powered down.

ROBLOX does not use a webcam in any way for gameplay. Even if it would, a pop up message would appear asking you if you allow it. Run a full virus scan to make sure you don't have any spyware or malware installed on your computer. I recommend using Malwarebytes to scan for viruses, it's by far one of the best programs I've used to do virus scans. Best of luck my dude.

@TheRandomProffesor I meant put Duct tape over the lens, but that works too.

Hello! I'm glad to see so many people have offered help. So far your best choice is to listen to TheRandomProfessor. Roblox has NO use for your webcam and or microphone, and will likely never implement this as some have stated before. This is a personal computer problem that will need to be handled through your computer. I advise taking Professor's steps. Also, tell your kids to be careful on installing things that seem un-trustworthy. I know you are just looking out for your kids, but they aren't as likely to see many websites as unsecure or dangerous. So be sure to let them know about what they download. If a virus is turning on your camera, I'd say it was probably a pretty bad website they visited or downloaded to cause this. Hopefully this gives you some help and or indication on what needs to be done. Check for viruses, and if this does not work, your operating system will likely need to be restarted or checked. (I am also not an employee, you can email ROBLOX support, but I HIGHLY doubt there is anything they can do for you other then tell you about a virus on your computer. I'd further suggest calling more personal-computer handling lines for your computer.)

Thanks everyone. I did contact Roblox support over a week ago but have yet to receive any response which I'm not impressed with considering the potential harm here and the fact that Roblox is used by a lot of kids. I will try some alternative AV & spyware products and also reinstall roblox from the official site. I'll keep this thread updated for future reference.

Ok, MalwareBytes found a few things, but nothing that would explain the webcam behavior. I also removed (verified removal) and reinstalled Roblox from the official site, but the webcam light is still coming on. However, I ran TCPView to monitor outgoing connections and there is only the Roblox .exe file sending data at a rate of about 1k/sec, which is way too slow for either webcam video or audio. I think this might be a false alarm. It's still weird tho.
