A nuclear holocaust in the Cold War would have likely started from a false alarm, besides the CMC most of our closest encounters with such a war with the Soviets weren't face to face.
The Cold War (in the 60's) was a massive psychological war with neither side knowing the others true intentions. Yes neither side truly wanted to nuke the other because of the assured consequences but that doesn't mean neither side was never going to.

2. can we go back to what you said about the US considering nuking the middle east after 9/11?
3. i am 100% sure that neither side was ever going to use a nuke. the fact that there was a big warning alarm saying that there was a nuclear warhead coming their way and they still refused to press the big red button is evidence enough.

US literally considered "all options" and had drawn out plans for a possible nuclear strike in the middle east.

Rune has clearly never heard of Stanislav Petrov, the man who literally prevented a rain of nuclear hell descending upon the world in 1983.
That's also not even close to the only close encounter we've had with global nuclear war. Both sides knew of the "mutually assured destruction" conclusion but both sides were going to take down the other if one did something stupid.
Or in the case of the Stanislav Petrov story, the Soviets were about to destroy the West over a computer system malfunction. |

Believe it or not, Trump isn't the only Western politician (I use this term very generously) at the moment who has no problem using nukes. Britain's new prime minister Theresa May also said she'd have no problem using them. |
