Avatar the last airbender movie [2]

Whats wrong with The Hunger Games films? They're very good films but they're also water-downed. The Hunger Games is not the worst film ever made, thats just stupidity talking and YA hate right there. They got good reviews and started off with an oscar-winning director and had oscar-winning actors and oscar-winning writers, it had a GREAT soundtrack, good cinematography, and great performances. Although the execution was a missed opportunity and was instead watered down.

>Avatar the last airbender movie I erased that film from my memory. I do not like mentioning it on any form of media. However, it is the worst film ever made in my opinion. That film is a perfect example of how to screw up one of the best cartoons ever made. As far as the Hunger Games go, Oscars do not define the quality of a film. That award show is obviously rigged and is primarily used to feed the obsession of fans to their stars. Any award show carries no weight with me personally and is one of the worst standards ever made. Although many view the Hunger Games series of films as "good", I never saw the appeal or groundbreaking material many describe it as. The story was needlessly predictable and the acting was, at least in my opinion, sub-par. I understand that the cast is portraying characters younger than they are, but I found most of their performances to be stiff and pale. I also found the characters hard to invest in as they never really showed any personality. Although Jennifer Lawrence did a good job of portraying Katniss' determination as her top priority, she lacked in several other aspects such as properly relaying emotion and peril to the audience. Not to mention the dialogue between Katniss and Peter was not done well at all. It almost felt like they were mocking the lines rather than actually trying to form a relationship. Although their relationship was slightly dysfunctional in the books, I never saw how one would even consider that they had a relationship in the movie. The storyline of the movie was also quite choppy. I understand that the books were very different from the film, but the story was widely misinterpreted by the audience. The film had strong anti-socilaist, anti-communist, and anti-fascist views that were completely revoked. Plus, the film also portrayed the upper-class [rich] characters as blissfully unaware and uninterested in their society despite some of those characters were working against the dictatorship and were portrayed as more intelligent than they were in the film. Finally, I disliked the film series because they made it too similar to Twilight in terms of marketing. The film was heavily portrayed as the 'thinking-girls Twilight' by both the cast and directors rather than a female oriented action/thriller, which was how it was portrayed in it's novelization. Instead, it was turned into an action/drama, which was a very hefty step down, as the film pretty much made the side ######## more ######### than the thrilling elements. Keep in mind these are my opinions about the film and to not take them personal.

I actually agree on all of your statements besides Jennifer Lawrence's acting, I thought she did a great job with Katnisd especially since the character is depressed, trust me I would know.

I think the Hunger Games suffers a lot from just generally having a very unlikeable protagonist. Jennifer Lawrence is charismatic, sure, but Katniss is so... Blegh. She's just so boring. She's an example of how NOT to write a strong female character. She just sort of goes from one place to another at the behest of others and just... Does stuff. I honestly can't remember a single thing she said in the movies. Besides that, the first movie is pretty solid. However, I'd much rather rewatch Catching Fire; just a lot easier and more fun to watch. The first is quite tough to get through (pacing and how grim it is) but it did have an amazing climax and build up (did catching fire even have a climax? It just seemed to kind of... End?)

I believe they intended Katniss to be flawed and plus she is depressed, usually depressed people have very "boring" personalities. I actually agree on the first film being the best, I don't get the bandwagon on why everyone hated Gary Ross but loved Francis Lawrence. I liked Gary Ross' vision and thought he did a great job especially with that PG-13 rating, he knew how to put violence in there and it did have that "indie film feel", Francis didn't.

Agreed. The second felt as if they were desperate to appeal to the masses and just milk a crap ton of money out of the franchise.

Depression is a pretty far stretch when you are describing someone like Katniss. Depression is a very self-centered illness and ultimately causes people to act irrational and narcissistic in certain ways. Not to mention depression is usually resulted from isolation among various other causes. Katniss does not fit the description of depressed because she finds attachment to other people [Peta] and also allows others into her life. Not to mention she does not crave attention as she is actively avoiding outside influence on many of her ideals. Depression is a very hard thing to accurately portray in a movie, contrary to popular belief. Katniss is more or less resentful than anything else. She resents the fact that her family situation is the way it is, she resents the public for not voicing their opinion out of fear of repercussions, and she is most certainly resentful against her government for being the way it is. As far as the film itself goes, I do agree with the fact Hunger Games should have been R. In fact, the final film could have easily fit the R rating if they would not have bribed the MPAA into making it PG-13. The book was not meant for a younger audience, which is another reason why I disliked the film based on it's marketing. No one under the age of 16 (or a very mature 13 year old, to be fair) could even understand what the film is about.

I was 10 or 11 when I read the books and I perfectly understood the messages and I do think that they should have been a R Rating. Also Katniss is depressed, the author said so and she did seem very depressed. She had almost no friends, she dislikes Peeta until near the end of the second book. Anyways if there is a remake, I hope it does the book justice.

I'm not trying to start an argument, but that's not how depression works. There are different levels of depression and Katniss does not meet either. Just because she does not allow outside influence on her ideals (by that I mean she is not influenced by other individuals beliefs), does not qualify her as depressed. The same goes for her being introverted. Just because someone does not have a lot of friends or is introverted does not mean she is pushing someone away. That just means she likes to have a closed circle of friends. She may exhibit traits someone may think qualifies as depression, but that is not necessarily true in Katniss' case. If she were depressed she would not have gone on such a convoluted journey to free everyone from their government.

It's not like she wanted to, other people convinced her and also the author CONFIRMED that she was depressed and like I said before I of all people know she is and there is no way someone can argue with that.

@bore I could write a book with a character who's constantly jumping about, laughing, playing, doing the splits and whatnot... If I then go on to say in an interview or whatever that the character was depressed, that means that either I'm lying, or the character is just badly written. End of story. Katniss is just a boring, badly written character whom even Jennifer Lawrence couldn't save.
