Standard notation is incredibly important, I've studied music for a long time, the reason you want to learn it is it tells a musician which notes to play, when to play them, and how to play them.

if you don't plan on playing classical or using notation in any way, music notation isn't really necessary but it would probably be beneficial to know the basics at least
