alas after 30 hours into the game and....
the game is just good but it isn't anywhere near great or amazing
i appreciate all the new things its trying to do, and for some parts it succeeds
i love riding pokemon, its absolutely a blast, what a great way to get rid of the hm
however i have a number of issues with the game and some relate to gamefreak as a whole
first off, does anyone find it weird gamefreak removes and adds features? look at the medal system, the pokenav, and more. they literally pick and choose. hmm, lets keep amie (yeah i know they changed crap) but throw super challenge.
why remove the pss? it was great having the online functions always there accessible at the bottom screen now you relegate it to a separate place? i must go there to get request? i don't get gamefreak, they had a great system that they just changed.
second, the trials. people have been saying how they "change the game." I'm here saying they are a mixed bag. i love the totem pokemon. they actually provide a sense of challenge where most gym leader don't. they are also impressive to look at as well. however, the actual tasks are hit and miss. why? MOST OF THEM ARE FETCH QUESTS. what kind of BS is this people say it has "variety" where most of it is just go here and there or find this and that. at least with gyms you had puzzles and things to do.
if the feature was to return, add puzzles and more interesting mechanics. every trial is a freaking fetch quest and its annoying. some work some don't.
id also like to address the story. now, i actually liked x and y. however, my main issue was the awful story. to me, rpgs must at least have some sense of story for me to be compelled (you are asking me for 30+ hours of time). that's why i loved black and white.
i appreciate what they are trying to do with sun and moon. i really do. in fact i like how they are taking a more cinematic approach. that being said...
i have issues. first off, they need to provide snappier dialogue. some of the writing feels off. for example, in the beginning hau just appears out of nowhere and its like LETS BATTLE I DONT KNOW YOU. i get it, they need to move the plot along, but at the sacrifice of making an actual story flow? the dialogue is just off sometimes where it feels like its either exposition or just trying to push you through quick.
and when it does go slower and has quiet moments, ITS GREAT. it makes the cinematics moments feel earned and more triumphant. the overall story i would say is fine. i will say Lillie needs some ironing out as a character though. she is a very by the numbers character for most of the game. |
