Just so that the people who think "hurrrr the loser point for overtime creates false parity" can shut up. Almost every other hockey league awards regulation wins with 3 points anyway, as does every international tournament except the comical flop that was the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

@ Dark Both regulation and overtime wins in the NHL are rewarded with 2 points, but if you lose in overtime you get 1 point which some people disparagingly call the "loser point". Almost every other league also has the loser point but they reward teams that win in regulation time with 3 points. NHL fans are starting to blame the loser point for causing "false parity" when the only thing causing that is the lack of three points for a regulation win.

@dark pretty much every single pro hockey league and major international tournament uses the format where a game can only ever possibly give out 3 points, going like this: RW-OTW-OTL-RL. in the NHL it's W-L-OTL. basically if you have to play to OT you lose a point for needing to go to OT, and that point is instead awarded to your opponent, rather than a third point just randomly being given like it is in the NHL. NHL: Win in 3 periods: 2 points Win in OT: 2 points Lose in OT: 1 point Lose in 3 periods: 0 points Result: Teams in the standings look closer than they actually are Almost everywhere else: Win in 3 periods: 3 points Win in OT: 2 points Lose in OT: 1 point Lose in 3 periods: 0 points Result: Standings actually reflect the teams' performances Now do you understand?

instead of a W-L system like nfl, nba and mlb, its a points system similar to soccer

TBH I would prefer if the NHL went to a W-L system instead "If you're juiceful you're useful."

The trapezoid rule is probably the worst thing to ever happen to the NHL's rules. It was specifically meant to combat legitimate tactics used by one goalie because he was so good at playing the puck. The NHL basically decided that penalizing goalies for going in a "restricted area" was a better solution than waiting for those tactics to become the standard or punishing out-of-position goalies who play the puck badly by just having the other team score an easy goal on an open net. And now that said goalie is retired, it's literally a useless rule.

I take back the first thing I said. The "two-line pass" rule was worse.

imagine the 2 line rule still in play today and people complaining about scoring numbers

the worst rule was actually the forward passing rule : 3 RIP Koolboy123, Oct. 1, 1992-Apr. 27, 2016 ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ

And the NHL is absolutely convinced that "reducing the size of goalie gear" is going to actually increase scoring. Unless a goalie is slow as molasses at moving around he's still going to be able to save it, not to mention that lighter gear can potentially increase injury risks for goalies. A better solution if you want to ruin a goalie's save percentage and GAA would be to increase the size of the nets.

bettman's worse isn't his rule changes. It's the desperate ploys for money and ratings that make the sport look stupid as a whole. "If you're juiceful you're useful."

all star vote isn't even the worst. the stupid outdoor classic games that have the blackhawks and penguins in it every year. the protecting of stars to much. teams in the south that for some reason have a team. the world cup of hockey which was not fun to watch at all. bettman is the worst commissioner of all sports. trust me, in 20 years hockey will lose its true fans. Also every time that Bettman actually has a good idea he finds a way to make it a terrible idea. He ruined expansion by only expanding to 31 teams instead of 32 (ignoring the fact that he literally put the 31st team in a market that's inevitably going to lose the team before 2030) and he ruined the 2016 World Cup with two stupid gimmick teams. Fortunately those are fixable and Bettman has, in fact, at least promised to remove the gimmick teams in time for the 2020 World Cup, but he's avoided listening to reason for so long that it's not likely that he'll actually start to do so.
