I've been thinking about this for a while...
What do you define as a successful group?
Here's my criteria:
1. Culture
Creates a culture where everyone is there for a reason, and wants to be there for a reason. Soldiers feel welcome and motivated to complete group objectives without the direct ordering of high ranking officials.
2. Leadership
Are your leaders always trying? Are they taking initiative? Your job isn't to tell and remind every high rank what to do. Their job is to remind themselves. If they aren't doing this, then they aren't leaders. And without leaders you don't have followers. And without followers, you don't have a group.
3. Activity
Good activity, not the bad activity. I'm talking about a steady stream of dedicated soldiers attending all group event. Those ones you can put your trust in. They are the ones you should be investing your time with. If you can get a couple of the same people show up to training regularly, you're on the road to a successful group.

TIP!! (consider the following)
I've seen this too many times. Leaders wait around at their training facility for nobody to show up and then complain how "our members are bad", or "nobody here is dedicated", or "i can't take my members anymore" and in turn, they proceed to shout:
[T] Thanks for nobody showing up. Really enjoyed waiting for an hour. Next time, read the shout and come to the training otherwise your will be demoted. Hope to see everyone there next time!
Wow. First of all, you told your members that they were being ignorant and useless, and now you expect them to come to the next training? What the heck?
Sorry, just figured that the text above would help some people out. Also, if nobody comes in the first 15 minutes, CANCEL IT. STOP WASTING YOUR TIME.

In sum:
Definition of a successful group:
A good culture with motivated and disciplined leaders, and a constant stream of dedicated members.
1. Culture
2. Leaders
3. Activity
I had no motivation for this, other than to help people who are struggling with groups. I've been through many and learned much. If you have anything to add, please reply on this thread.
Happy clanning,
